چکیده

Euphydryas gillettii is a Rocky Mountain endemic butterfy distributed in small, widely separated populations, which appear to be declining. This paper presents the results of a genetic diversity assessment within and among E. gdlettii colonies comprising the Glacier National Park (GNP) metapopulation. Four colonies were assayed within GNP during 1988 and 1989, and two outgroups, colonies from Idaho and Wyoming, were also compared with GNP populations for allelic uniqueness and heterogeneity. D%feences between the 1988 and 1989 data suggest that E. gillettii may exist as a biennial population. Minor dfferences were found among GNP populatwnr while larger dzrerences were found among M o n t m , Wyoming and Idaho populationr. Heterozygosity was higher than expected, suggesting a potential selective advantage for heterozygotes. Heterozygosity was also found to be higher in populations that were distributed in a linear space along stream corridors relative to those in meadows. More research should be conducted with respect to dispersal along streams as it appears that these corridors may be signifcant in the maintenance of the

Variable chemical defence in the checkerspot butterfly Euphydryas gillettii (Lepidoptera: NymphaIidae)

1. Like other checkerspots, Euphydryas gillettii butterflies may contain the defensive chemicals, iridoid glycosides, which are sequestered from their hostplants during larval feeding. 2. We analysed the iridoid glycoside content of E.gillettii adults from two different populations, Warm Lake, Idaho, and Granite Creek, Wyoming, that have different patterns of hostplant use. 3. Gas chromatograph...

Genomic inference accurately predicts the timing and severity of a recent bottleneck in a nonmodel insect population.

The analysis of molecular data from natural populations has allowed researchers to answer diverse ecological questions that were previously intractable. In particular, ecologists are often interested in the demographic history of populations, information that is rarely available from historical records. Methods have been developed to infer demographic parameters from genomic data, but it is not...

Delayed population explosion of an introduced butterfly.

1. The causes of lagged population and geographical range expansions after species introductions are poorly understood, and there are relatively few detailed case studies. 2. We document the 29-year history of population dynamics and structure for a population of Euphydryas gillettii Barnes that was introduced to the Colorado Rocky Mountains, USA in 1977. 3. The population size remained low (< ...

The endangered quino checkerspot butterfly, Euphydryas editha quino (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)

With the listing of the quino checkerspot butterfly, Euphydryas editha quino, as a federally endangered species, research into its ecology and conservation is necessary to allow for recovery planning and management. We review systematics, distribution, natural history, and conservation prospects, with reference to pertinent literature about other E. editha subspecies. Additional information is ...

Long-term metapopulation study of the Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia): survey methods, data management, and long-term population trends

Long-term observational studies conducted at large (regional) spatial scales contribute to better understanding of landscape effects on population and evolutionary dynamics, including the conditions that affect long-term viability of species, but large-scale studies are expensive and logistically challenging to keep running for a long time. Here, we describe the long-term metapopulation study o...
